On Friday, the children received their President Project Rubric and directions. This a fun project to be done at home and then shared in class. We spent some time deciding on how to pick their president. They may have a connection to one by name, birthday, interest, pet, or some other fun fact they might find out. I chose Bill Clinton for my project because he was the first president I was old enough to vote for. Last week, we learned what a president is and a little bit about past presidents. This week in honor of President's day, we will be comparing two presidents Washington and Lincoln using a Venn Diagram.

We are having a great time with our Geography unit on Maps and Globes. The children will be learning that maps are a tool we use to show information about places. We will explore different types of maps and ask the question, "why are maps helpful?" The children will be able to identify the 4 cardinal directions, the two poles, the equator, the capital of the US, the capital of Massachusetts, the map key and 4 more physical features on a map. This is one of my favorite units and I am looking forward to exploring with your children.
Do you have a map at home that you could spare? We would love to have a collection to reference during our unit. :)

This week we will be learning about another one of our national holidays that is coming up.
Thanksgiving!
This year in first grade we are adding a short play to our curriculum to incorporate our Social Studies Learning standard 1.5: Reasons for celebrating National Holidays and our Speaking and Listening Standard 1.1A: Listening to others and speaking one person at a time.
Our play is going to be based on the story "Thanksgiving Day" by Anne Rockwell. It is a cute story about a class learning about Thanksgiving Day while preparing for a play. We will be doing the same next week! In addition to reading the story and learning our lines we will be making small costumes and a couple small props to go with our story. This is my first time doing the play. I hear it is very short
(5 minutes) so the children will also sing a couple songs at the end and share a writing piece. I am really looking forward to this event and hope you will join us.
You are invited to Room 103's first play, (short 5min. play)
